Has the “house of ideas” run out of ideas? Has “direct current” run out of wattage?
If you don’t know what I’m talking about I’m talking about the most recent “big” event from the two biggest comic publishers in the world “a v.s.x” and “the new 52”.
If you haven’t read any of these books I don’t want to spoil it too much for you, but let me just say in a.v.s.x. a major character dies (again) and in the “new 52” we are told all those stories featuring wally west were lost in bobby ewing’s shower.
Maybe I’m being too harsh if i’m going to be fair there are a lot of books I still enjoy from both companies books like, Mark Waid’s “Daredevil”, “Dark Avengers”(thunderbolts)
Pre-52 “Green Lantern,” “Batman and Robin”(Damon Wayne is no one’s victim). I even mess with a few of the new 52 titles “Earth 2,” World Finest,” “Aquaman,” “Frankenstein,” “Batwing” are all good-to-great titles but they could’ve all easily fit in the old timeline and in some cases they did, but if I had to point to the biggest problem with the “new 52” it’s the stories don’t pass the smell test. The new origins(tim drake really) makes no sense, this whole five year thing and the less said about books like “Justice League” and the mess that has turned into “Action Comics” the better. Lately all the drama at DC Comics is not in the books, but behind the scenes with the creators and the editorial staff (yes Rob Liefeild, I’m looking at you). This is the entertainment business people, and these are the most famous characters in the world, but some of the stories being produced in the last year don’t rise above fan fiction, it makes you shake your head.
I’m not mad at DC just disappointed, because I’m saving most of my anger for marvel. You see despite their problems I think D C Comics at its core is invested in telling stories (bad ones mind you) about super heroes in conflict vs evil. But at marvel I’m pretty sure the whole place is being run by the hate-monger, because every story seems to be about super heroes beating the shit out of each other instead of the villains. The proof is in the books, “Civil wars,” “secret invasions,”and now a.v.s.x., with all of these major conflicts how can any of these heroes ever trust each other anymore? At the moment they don’t even like each other and as a fan why would I invest any time in these guys anymore? Why don’t we just have Galactus eat the planet and be done with it, I can’t remember the last time the Marvel heroes approached anything close to being anything heroic, Iron-man and Reed Richard’s actions In “Civil war” resulted in the death of Black Goliath, but it’s ok because they said ‘sorry”, Scarlet Witch kills the Avengers, destroys a whole race of mutants, but it’s ok because she was suffering from post partum depression, again. The latest brainstorm is Cyclops the mutant terrorist, What the hell? After reading about that new development in the trades I wanted to set my whole marvel collection on fire wicker-man style and pray to the pagan gods to bring Jack Kirby back and give Stan Lee back his writing skills.
It’s depressing to see so many characters acting so out of character just so they can fit a certain event. The writers need a mad scientist, “Let’s use Reed Richards fuck it he’s always doing weird shit who cares if his whole family will hate him”,”we can just reset the clock later”. The goal nowadays is to get the fans to buy 30 books in one crossover not write kick ass stories. The truth is with movies,tv shows, toys, etc., taking a life of its own the comic division is nothing more than support for these other departments. That’s why so many long time characters change personalities, powers and style in the comics world after a successful transition to another genre.
That’s because the marketing department is writing the comics and not the comic department.
-Now if that isn’t a plot by a super villain I don’t what is
